Girl with dog wearing pink sweater set

Merino wool might be nature’s softest overachiever—odor-resistant, breathable, temperature-regulating—but that doesn’t mean it’s indestructible. Caring for it properly is the difference between a lifelong favorite and a sweater that mysteriously shrinks to toddler size. Here’s how to keep your merino looking fresh, soft, and perfectly drapey.

1. Hand wash like a pro.
Merino doesn’t need constant washing—often, a simple air-out will do. But when it’s time, fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water and add a few drops of gentle wool detergent. Look for formulas labeled wool wash, lanolin-enriched, or for delicates—brands like The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo, Eucalan, or Soak are ideal. Avoid regular laundry detergents, which strip the fibers and cause pilling. Gently swirl the garment in the water for a few minutes (no wringing, twisting, or scrubbing), then let it soak for 10–15 minutes.

2. Rinse and reshape.
Empty the basin and refill with clean cool water to rinse. Support the fabric with both hands—merino can stretch when wet. Once clean, press out the excess water carefully (a towel roll-up works beautifully).

3. Always air dry—never, ever tumble dry.
Heat is merino’s mortal enemy. Lay your garment flat on a clean towel, reshape it to its original dimensions, and let it air dry away from sunlight or direct heat sources. The dryer, even on “low,” will cause irreversible shrinkage and distortion.

4. Dry cleaning: an occasional option.
If your merino piece has a tailored structure or delicate knit, dry cleaning is safe—but unnecessary for most basics. Gentle handwashing is often kinder and more sustainable.

Handled with care, merino rewards you with years of wear and minimal maintenance—proof that effortless style starts with thoughtful rituals.
